To provide a tensioning device for snow chain which can obtain desired tension without depending on a pulling force of elastic means.SOLUTION: A tensioning device 10 has: a casing which is easily fitted to a ring outside a snow chain so that the snow chain is tensioned by a cable 20 which can be pulled out of the device, and comprises a base 11' and a cover 11"; and a pulley 30 in which one end of a cable is arrested and accommodated in the casing, and has one set of teeth 34 with which at least one detent of a claw 50 is engaged. The base and the cover of the casing respectively have circular holes 12', 12" in which opposite hubs of a hollow shaft 31 of the pulley are accommodated. The hollow shaft 31 has a polygonal hole 32 with which a polygonal pin 41 of a knob 42, which rotates the pulley and applies a desired tensile force when at least one detent of the claw 50 is engaged with one set of teeth of the pulley.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
