The present invention relates to the field of in vitro 3D modeling of neural tissue, especially tissue derived from the brain. There is a need for the development of neural tissue cell culture models that reflect the physiological aspects of neural tissue. The present invention provides bioengineered neural organoids (BENOs) that form neural networks. The invention also relates to the use and application of the produced BENOs, for example in the field of drug screening and personalized medicine.
