The present invention is a method of precipitating 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (or ANPZO) present in an acidic medium as particles, which comprises adding the acidic medium to an aqueous solution. And the aqueous solution contains nitrate. The present invention is also a method of performing this precipitation method to synthesize ANPZO. This synthetic method involves the conversion of 2,6-diaminopyrazine-1-oxide (or DAPO) to ANPZO by nitration in an acidic medium, and then adding the acidic medium to an aqueous solution to form ANPZO.
