A non-toxic antibacterial chemical trap comprising an antibacterial layer containing nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and a film containing an antibacterial substance selected from the group consisting of MgO and Mg (OH) 2. In some embodiments, the antibacterial trap comprises at least one additional NCC layer above or below the antibacterial layer. In addition to disclosing methods for preparing antibacterial chemical traps and articles coated thereby, methods for controlling microbial populations by using antibacterial chemical traps are also disclosed.
