The present invention provides a method for preparing 1,5-pentanediol by hydrogenolysis of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. The catalyst used in this method is prepared by loading a noble metal and a promoter on an organic polymer support or an inorganic hybrid material support, the support being functionalized with a nitrogen-containing ligand. If the catalyst is used for the hydrogenolysis of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol to prepare 1,5-pentanediol, good reaction activity and high selectivity can be achieved. The promoter and the nitrogen-containing ligand in the support bind to the catalyst via coordination, whereby the loss of promoter is significantly reduced and the catalyst has a particularly high stability. Lifetime studies of catalysts that have been reused many times or that have been used continuously for extended periods of time suggest that the catalysts have no appreciable change in performance, thus reducing the manufacturing cost of the overall process.
