PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin capable of providing a cured product which is free from halogen, and has a high glass transition temperature and high flame retardancy by reaction of a maleimide compound.SOLUTION: There is provided an aryl ether-modified biphenylaralkyl novolak resin represented by general formula (1). In general formula, A represents an aryl group; R represents H, C1 to C10 saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group and may be the same or different; j, k and l each independently represent an integer of 1 to 2 and any one of j, k and l is 2; p, q and r each independently represent an integer of 0 to 3; a relationship of k+q≤4 holds; n represents a value of 0 to 20; and some of the plurality of aryl groups represented by A may be substituted with a hydrogen atom.SELECTED DRAWING: None
