The present disclosure is a method of drying a hydrogel containing nanofibril cellulose, comprising providing a hydrogel containing nanofibril cellulose, providing polyethylene glycol, and mixing the hydrogel, polyethylene glycol and trehalose to form a mixture. Obtaining and lyophilizing the mixture to obtain a dried hydrogel comprising nanofibril cellulose. The present disclosure relates to lyophilizable hydrogels containing nanofibril cellulose, lyophilized hydrogels containing nanofibril cellulose, and medical hydrogels containing nanofibril cellulose and one or more therapeutic agents.
