The present disclosure provides compositions and methods for the treatment of renal disease by the chemokine protein stromal cell derived factor 1 (SDF-1), eg, methods of treating a subject having or at risk of developing renal disease. A method comprising administering SDF-1 to a kidney of a subject in a therapeutically effective amount.
