PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode multiplexer/demultiplexer and a mode multiplex transmission system by using which the transmission capacity and transmission distance of a communication system are hardly restricted even in mode multiplex transmission.SOLUTION: A mode multiplexer/demultiplexer 301 is formed by combining a plurality of single mode waveguides 12, a multimode waveguide 11 for propagating a plurality of propagation modes, mode rotors 14, 16, and confluent parts 13, 15 of the single mode waveguides and the multimode waveguide. Lights from the single mode waveguides are distributed and transmitted to the respective propagation modes of the multimode waveguide.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
