PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer matrix capable of not only suppressing the relaxation of orientation of an organic nonlinear optical compound but also being able to orient the organic nonlinear optical compound to a higher degree and facilitating viscosity adjustment. To provide a composition containing an organic nonlinear optical compound and an optical material obtained by using the composition. A composition containing a norborneneimide copolymer having a structural unit represented by the formula [1] and a structural unit represented by the formula [2], and an organic nonlinear optical compound. (In the formula, R1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms which may have a substituent, or an aryl group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms which may have a substituent.
