To provide a steel for induction hardening having excellent machinability, surface fatigue strength and bending fatigue strength.SOLUTION: A steel for induction hardening comprises, in mass%, C: 0.40-0.70%, Si: 0.15-2.10%, Mn: 0.30-1.15%, Cr: 0.01-less than 0.50%, S: 0.005-0.070%, N: 0.0020-0.0200%, Al: 0.005-0.100%, P: less than 0.050%, with the balance being Fe and impurities, its chemical composition satisfying the following formulae, and its ferrite volume fraction being 40% or less. 290C+50Si+430≥631.0.
