Transdermal drug delivery device for delivering opioids

Provided herein are systems and methods for transdermal delivery of opioids. To minimize withdrawal symptoms and abuse, opioids can be delivered in a escalating dose (dose escalation) manner. The system is further designed to restrict non-patients from receiving medication with the transdermal delivery device. The system may further include an abuse deterrence feature that makes it difficult for the patient or unauthorized user to tamper with the device to receive the active ingredient. In addition, a novel transdermal drug delivery formulation is provided, which contains an opioid agonist or partial agonist, and an opioid antagonist that prevents abuse of the formulation.
