A videoconferencing system includes a server adapted to store information associated with multiple videoconferencing rooms, each including a videoconferencing codec and a system controller, and the system controller is in communication with the server via one or more wired and/or wireless communication networks. The system includes a mobile computing device configured to exchange data with the server to determine whether at least one of the videoconferencing rooms is within a defined proximity of the mobile computing device, and in response to determining that at least one of the videoconferencing rooms is within the defined proximity of the mobile computing device, transmit one or more commands to the system controller located in the determined at least one videoconferencing room. The system controller is configured to control the videoconferencing codec located in the determined at least one videoconferencing room according to the one or more commands to establish or control a videoconference.
