a separating hydrocyclone (1) and a method (500) are available to classify the solid material in liquid suspension. the separating hydrocyclone comprises a head portion (2) with an inlet duct (3) and an overflow discharge tube (4) arranged in the head part (2). the separating hydrocyclone (1) also has an apex discharge port (8) and a conical separation portion (5) disposed between the head part and the apex discharge port. the conical separation portion tapers distally away from the head. in addition, the separating hydrocyclone has a flow support portion with at least one flow support inlet (9) configured to inject a fluid over at least a portion of an inner surface (12) of the flow support portion towards the apex discharge port, when the separating hydrocyclone is oriented so that the apex discharge port is in a vertically elevated position in relation to the overflow discharge tube. thus, a separating hydrocyclone is obtained capable of achieving improved operational efficiency with reduced risk of clogging the apex discharge port.
