a method and a path discovery system for multiple layers of shorter routes between a source network element and a destination network element are described in relation to the technical field of telecommunication transmission network management. the method comprises the steps of: s1: determining an output port and an input port of each network element through which the outermost path passes, where the source network element is an initial network element, and the final target network element is a final network element; s2: determining an initial network element and an ending network element of each path layer according to each network element through which the outermost path passes; and s3: forming the shortest route of the path layer according to the initial network element and the final network element of each path layer, and the input and output port of each network element through which the path layer passes. according to the present invention, the path discovery method for the shortest route of each path layer can be unified and thus the completeness of the shortest path between the source network element and the destination network element can be guaranteed, user requirements are completely satisfied, and the method is suitable for popularization.
