A method for determining the transverse flow in an injection well in a multilayer reservoir. To identify the afterflow indicating a transverse flow, wellhead pressure is measured and a characteristic curve is analyzed. The pressure shock wave can also be analyzed when the well is closed to identify if the pilot portion of the wellbore is filled with sand. By measuring wellhead pressure, continuous monitoring of the injection well is provided and does not require penetration into the well, thereby allowing measures to be taken to reduce sand discharge and maintain injectivity.
