The invention relates to a method for identifying a cell type or the presence or absence of a cell type associated with a response to abiraterone or enzalutamide in a cancer patient, comprising (a) conducting a direct assay including immunofluorescence staining and determining the morphological characteristics of nucleated cells in a blood sample obtained from patient, for identification and counting of circulating tumor cells (CTC); (b) isolation of the CTC from the sample; (c) the individual determination of parameters in order to create a profile for each of the CTCs, and (d) the identification of biomarker CTCs, while the presence or absence of biomarker CSCs allows predicting the patient's susceptibility to treatment with abiraterone or enzalutamide.
