METHOD FOR DIAGNOSIS OF PRIMARY HYPERALDOSTERONISM

The present invention concerns a method for the diagnosis of primary hyperaldosteronism (PHA). This method is based on the use of a new diagnostic parameter that is composed of the ratio between the steady state equilibrium Ang II level and the aldosterone level in a biological sample. The method of the invention provides for following sequence of steps: measuring the aldosterone level and the angiotensin II (Ang II) level in a biological sample from a subject, wherein the steady state equilibrium level of angiotensin II is measured, calculating the ratio between the aldosterone level and the Ang II level (aldosterone-to-Ang II-ratio, AA2R). Primary hyperaldosteronism is diagnosed if a certain value of a AA2R is higher as compared to the AA2R of one or more confirmed non-PHA subjects. A low AA2R as compared to the AA2R of one or more confirmed PHA subjects indicates no primary hyperaldosteronism. The provided method has clear advantages over currently used diagnostic methods, and in particular is characterised by an increased sensitivity and specificity.
