The present disclosure is related to a therapeutic alternative to treat hepatocellular carcinoma, consisting of administering compositions comprising maleic anhydride derivatives and quercetin to act synergistically in inducing apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells by modulating oxidative stress, and of the cytotoxicity of these active ingredients. These effects are selective for hepatocellular carcinoma cells and do not affect normal cells.
