The invention relates to flame retardants comprising polysaccharides containing nitrogen and phosphorus and having a nitrogen content and a phosphorus content that both equal 2.5 to 25% and use thereof to improve the flame-retardant properties of wood and wood composite materials. The invention further relates to a wood composite material having improved flame-retardant properties and a method for the production thereof.
