The invention relates to a side rail tensioner, comprising a two parallel side walls having base body, designed as a one-armed lever clamp which is pivotally mounted about an orthogonal between the side cheeks of the body first pivot axis, and a hook member for engaging behind against the exciting tarpaulin serving as an abutment stationary support member which is pivotally mounted about an extending between the sidecar, parallel to the first pivot axis extending second pivot axis. On the main body means for transmitting the tension exerted by the tensioning clamp clamping movement are arranged on the tarpaulin. The means comprise for transmitting the tensioning movement exerted on the tarpaulin by the tensioning bow (2) to the tarpaulin a threaded bolt-nut combination which is fastened to the base body (1) and whose threaded bolt can be passed through a passage (52) of a retaining piece which bears against the tarpaulin to be tensioned is determinable.
