The invention relates to a method for activation of a zeolite material used to retain ammonia from still waters, the method being used for water filtration and purification. According to the invention, the method consists in sampling raw zeolite material from the geological deposit, washing it until the wash water loses its opacity, drying the washed zeolite material at low temperatures ranging between 50...100°C for 24...48 hours, followed by grinding up to a granulation of 0.5...3.5 mm and by a thermal treatment of the ground zeolite material at temperatures ranging between 120...320°C for 6...48 hours, the activated zeolite material being then packaged in triple gauze bags which are introduced into the contaminated water at concentrations of 0.5...3.2 mg ammonia in water, for a period of 5...10 days, in a ratio of 15...20 g of activated zeolite material/1 liter of contaminated water, with a retaining efficiency of 81...99%.
