The invention relates to a colorimetric method for the detection of organic mercury compounds, such as methylmercury and ethylmercury, based on the use of gold nanoparticles and mild reducing agents. The method of the invention advantageously allows analytes of interest to be detected in complex matrices, such as for example food products, without the aid of instrumentation and with high sensitivity and specificity for organic mercury compounds, without interference from other metals.
