The invention relates to a method for obtaining a coating of nickel aluminide on a metal substrate, comprising the following steps: a) coating the substrate with a deposit of nickel; b) applying an aluminum foil to the nickel deposit of step a) to form an assembly formed by the substrate coated with the nickel deposit and the aluminum foil; and c) subjecting this assembly to a heat treatment at a temperature below the melting temperature of the aluminum and under a reduced pressure to cause a reaction between the aluminum and the nickel and thereby form a layer of nickel aluminide. beta.-NiA1 overlying a nickel layer. The invention applies in particular to the protection of materials used in the turbines of aeronautical engines.
