A ventilation and smoke extraction system disclosed is flexible and effective. The system comprises an array of fans mounted on a plurality of carriages, at least one rail along which the plurality of carriages are displaceably disposed, a first driving means coupled to the carriages for driving the carriages along the rail, a second driving means coupled to the fans for displacing each fan along the carriage and third driving means for rotating each fan about vertical axis, at least one duct provided along the tunnel, the duct having at least one opening leading outside of tunnel, a plurality of spaced apart vents configured on the duct to facilitate removal of obnoxious gases from defined spaces within tunnel, and control means cooperating with the first, second and third driving means. The control means is configured to be activated for driving the carriages, displacing and rotating the fans about vertical axis.
