Disclosed in the present invention is a preparation method for a retarding ether type polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent, comprising the following steps: (1) esterified monomer preparation; (2) copolymerization; and (3) neutralization reaction. According to the preparation method of the present invention, a carbohydrate and crotonic acid undergoes esterification to prepare an esterified monomer, bringing advantages such as low costs and simple operations; the prepared carbohydrate esterified product participates in the subsequent copolymerization to make the main chain of a polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent be provided with a polyhydroxy structure, so that the prepared polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent has a good retarding effect. The initial retarding time and final retarding time for concrete are effectively prolonged, and negative influence brought by a retarder is reduced. Moreover, the carbohydrate polyhydroxy structure allows the polycarboxylic acid water reducing agent to have a good slump loss resistant property, and summer pumping construction of concrete is facilitated.
