The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a nanofiltration membrane, comprising the steps of providing a support structure (20) comprising a first mesoporous layer (21) made of TiO2 and/or ZrO2 and a second porous layer (22) adjacent to the mesoporous layer made of aluminium oxide; grafting an anchoring group selected from the group consisting of a phosphonic acid group, a Grignard reagent, a salicylic acid group, a carbohydrate or a phtalic acid group within pores of the first mesoporous layer (21), wherein the second layer (22) is inert to the grafting step; covalently bonding an initiator for a surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization reaction to the anchoring group; impregnating the support structure with a monomer and a solvent; and performing a polymerization reaction, comprising passing a catalyst through the mesoporous layer, the monomer being configured to start the polymerization reaction by grafting from the initiator in the presence of the catalyst. A nanofiltration membrane is provided as well.
