The invention relates to a method for comparing a first picture (14) of an object against a second picture (18) of the object by: – determining a first local set of points (20) for the first picture (14) and a second local set of points (30) for the second picture (18); – producing a first four-dimensional point-pair property collection (22) and a second four-dimensional point-pair property collection (32); – producing a low-dimensional first codeword (24) for the first four-dimensional point-pair property collection (22), and a low-dimensional second codeword (34) for the second four-dimensional point-pair property collection (32), by means of a coding device (26); – decoding the first codeword (24) to produce a first reconstructed four-dimensional point-pair property collection (12) and decoding the second codeword (34) to produce a second reconstructed four-dimensional point-pair property collection (16) by means of a decoding device (28); and – comparing the first codeword (24) against the second codeword (34) by means of the electronic computing device (10).
