A temperature-sensitive water absorbent which comprises a polyoxyalkylene adduct represented by general formula R¹O(AO)_nR² (1), the water absorbent being intended to attain a high osmotic pressure and a lower cloud point. In general formula (1), R¹ is a residue formed by removing the hydroxyl group from a C_6-13 monohydric alcohol; R² is a hydrogen atom or a C_1-13 alkyl or alkenyl group; AO is a C_2-4 oxyalkylene group; and n, indicating the average number of moles of the alkylene oxide added, is 1-235, and when n is 2 or larger, then the two or more AO moieties may be the same or different. R¹ may be a C_6-13 aliphatic monohydric alcohol residue, aliphatic linear monohydric alcohol residue, or aliphatic branched monohydric alcohol residue.
