The invention relates to an online optimisation method for setting the mode of operation of a fuel cell system (1) with reference to at least two target variables, comprising the steps: acquiring operating parameters of the fuel cell system (1), acquiring in each case one quality factor (G1-G4) for in each case at least one acquired operating parameter, wherein in each case one quality factor maps a target variable, calculating a quality function (J) on the basis of the acquired quality factors (G1-G4), acquiring actuation variables by means of the calculated quality function (J), and setting the mode of operation of the fuel cell system (1) on the basis of the acquired actuation variables. The invention further relates to a computer program (6), a memory means, a control device (7) and a fuel cell system (1) for carrying out the online optimisation method according to the invention.
