The present invention relates to a power supply unit (1) for or of a surgical instrument (2) operated by an electric motor, comprising: a battery-receiving housing (3), which is separate from and spatially spaced apart from the surgical instrument (2) and is designed or provided with a fastening means or retainer (4) suitable for temporarily fastening or retaining the power supply unit (1) on a body part of an operator; at least one power supply unit (1), which is designed to supply power to at least one motor system (6) of the surgical instrument (2) connected to said power supply unit; a control and monitoring device (6), which is designed to perform and/or monitor at least one function; and/or a cable (7) and/or a cable connection point (8) for connecting the cable (7) in order to electrically couple the power supply unit (1) to a surgical instrument (2) for the operation of the motor system (6) of the surgical instrument and/or for the transfer of data and/or operating parameters.
