The invention relates to a method for operating a cut-to-length device, in which an annular starting material in the form of rods, tubes, and semi-finished products made of metal is unwound and/or pulled off and cut into individual segments of a defined length. The method comprises detecting defective points in the starting material, and controlling the cutting length of the segments according to the detection of at least one defective point, wherein the defect-free starting material is cut to a specified target cutting length, and upon detection of at least one defective point, the starting material is cut to a scrap cutting length and rejected, which scrap cutting length is smaller or larger than the target cutting length, and which comprises at least one defective point. The invention further relates to a cut-to-length device for carrying out the method.
