The present invention addresses the problem of improving the test precision of a target substance detection system in which Wisteria floribunda lectin is used. The problem is solved by this method for detecting a target substance, the method including: a step in which Wisteria floribunda lectin (WFA) immobilized to a carrier and a target substance including a sugar chain that binds to WFA are mixed together in the presence of a C₁-C₇ alcohol consisting of a carbon atom, a hydrogen atom, and an oxygen atom, to produce a complex that contains, on the carrier, the WFA and the target substance; and a step for detecting the target substance by detecting the complex.
