The present invention relates to a slurry pump of centrifugal pump design for the transport of pumping media with highly abrasive solid particles comprising a pump motor, a frequency converter and a motor controller, wherein the motor shaft is connected rigidly to the pump impeller, and wherein the motor controller is designed in such a way that, in the event of a solid element coming into contact with the impeller, said motor controller reduces the pump rotational speed, in order in a targeted manner to damp a force impact which is triggered by way of the ejection of the solid element from the pump impeller and acts on the pump motor and/or at least one bearing.
