The present invention relates to a novel lactic acid bacteria strain, Lactobacillus brevis OMJ-46, and a composition for heavy metal detoxification prepared by using the novel lactic acid bacteria strain. More specifically, the present invention relates to a novel lactic acid bacteria strain with excellent glucose tolerance, Lactobacillus brevis OMJ-46, and to a composition exhibiting potent detoxification activity against heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and nickel (Ni), the composition comprising fermentation broth obtained by inoculating and culturing the lactic acid bacteria in a medium containing high concentrations of Schisandra chinensis juice, Platycodon grandiflorus extract, red ginseng extract, and oligosaccharides. Since Lactobacillus brevis OMJ-46 of the present invention, under accession number KCTC18686P, can be grown in high-glucose media containing Schisandra chinensis fruit juice, the novel lactic acid bacteria strain has a potential to be effectively used in various fermented foods and related industries. The composition for heavy metal detoxification prepared by using the novel lactic acid bacteria strain and a functional health food comprising the same for preventing and alleviating heavy metal toxicity-related diseases, as shown in the examples in the present specification, effectively attenuate toxicity associated with cadmium and copper, and thus can be used for prevention and treatment of various diseases caused by exposure to heavy metals. Thus, the present invention is extremely useful in the development of functional foods and various related fields.
