The disclosed technique detects chiller system instability that reduces false alarms. The smoothed time series of cooler temperature sensor data is tested in a predefined time window for a period of stable operation below a predetermined threshold. The disclosed technique predicts that a reagent cooler will be unstable if the duration of stable temperature operation is less than a predetermined stability measure or if the stable reagent cooler temperature exceeds a threshold. The disclosed technique detects a flow cell heater failure over multiple cycles in the system. The time series of flow cell heater temperature sensor data is tested to determine if the count value of the point in the latest process cycle has been recorded above the threshold. The disclosed technique determines that the flow cell heater fails if the count value of the point above the threshold in two successive cycles is less than the predetermined count value.
