Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for detecting roll wear. A problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide the apparatus and the method for detecting the roll wear, which can easily sense the roll wear during a process. The apparatus for detecting the roll wear according to the present invention comprises: two hole detectors arranged at predetermined intervals in a transport section of a strip provided with holes, and each sensing a passage time of the holes; and a computer which stores a reference speed of a roll, calculates a transport speed of the strip by using a difference in the passage time of the holes output from each of the two hole detectors and the distance between the two hole detectors, and determines whether the roll is worn or not based on the difference between the stored reference speed and the calculated current transport speed.
