The improved cathode may include a silicon-based active material blended with graphite to provide more stable cycling at high energy density. In some embodiments, the negative electrode comprises a blend of polyimide binder mixed with a more elastic polymer binder having a nanoscale carbon conductive additive. The graphite-blended silicon-based negative electrode can be matched with a positive electrode comprising a nickel-rich lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide to form a high energy density battery with good cycling properties.
