Systems, methods, and apparatus for electronically and editing representations of chemical structures using an intuitive user interface are described herein. This user interface, a context-aware virtual keyboard, makes it faster and easier to draw and edit chemical structure representations by guiding the user through the sequence of steps required to create the representation in a context-based, non-linear manner. The context-based virtual keyboard allows users to more quickly create graphical representations of complex chemical structures by using the structure itself as a basis for displaying efficient options for the next drawing/editing step. Different possible and/or likely actions (eg, editing the chemical structure being drawn) are presented to the user based on the selected navigation location on the picture. Thus, the user can efficiently and intuitively modify the chemical structure without tedious manual selection of parts of the chemical structure and without searching through complex menus.
