CSMA/CA Method and apparatus for estimating the number of devices in a slotted CSMA/CA network

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for estimating the number of terminals in a slot-based CSMA/CA network. The PAN coordinator observes each channel of the network to determine the first probability that at least one terminal will perform the first CCA in the back-off phase, and each terminal is confident of itself based on the history of its data frame transmission and CCA performance. After determining the second probability to perform the first CCA in this back-off step, the number of terminals is estimated using the ratio of the first probability determined by the PAN coordinator and the second probability determined by the PAN coordinator.
