The present invention relates to a DPA-enriched pharmaceutical composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids in free acid form, a method of treatment for the use thereof, and a method of purifying the composition from fish oil. It also relates to a method for treating hypertriglyceridemia (200 mg/dL-500 mg/dL) by the additional administration of a statin and a pharmaceutical composition described herein. Additionally, methods of treatment include, in particular, treatments that increase the plasma EPA:AA ratio, treatments that decrease ApoCIII concentrations, and treatments that reduce or inhibit resistance to platelet aggregation inhibitors.
