The present invention relates to a wheel detection system and method for detecting a position of a railway vehicle using a piezoelectric element; As the system is configured using a piezoelectric sensor without using a magnetic field method, the probability of wheel erroneous detection is low, and additional processing such as drilling or cutting is not required in the rail to install the piezoelectric sensor, resulting in rail deformation or damage. It provides a wheel detection system and method for detecting the position of a railway vehicle using a piezoelectric element, which is advantageous in securing safety due to a low probability of accident.
