FIELD: pulp industry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to polymer compositions for surface sizing of paper and cardboard. Disclosed is a water-soluble polymer composition obtained by polymerisation in an aqueous polymerisation medium, which contains split cationic or split non-ionic starch, acrylamide and/or methacrylamide and 2 mol % of at least one unsaturated mono- and dicarboxylic acid(s) or salts thereof with respect to the total monomer content. Polymer composition has the resultant anionic charge at pH 7 within the range of −0.5 to −2.5 mg-eq/g and content of solid substances 5 wt %.
