Character input device and vehicle navigation device equipped with a character input device

A character input device which requires neither an excessive operation nor arrangement of a new key for reconversion but can efficiently perform character input with a limited space, and a car navigation device equipped with the character input device are provided. Because the character input device provides a function of deleting an unconfirmed inputted character that the user is currently inputting and a function of changing a confirmed character string to an unconfirmed state for a single correction key, the character input device enables the user to perform character input efficiently by using a limited space without requiring undue operation and placement of a new key for reconversion. Further, since the character input device holds the information on confirmed character strings even after all the character strings have been confirmed, the character input device enables the user to arbitrarily select a character string that the user wishes to correct at any time and edit only the portion.
