The invention relates to a transmission device (1) for examining at least one sample in a microtiter plate (8) and to a method for examining at least one sample in a microtiter plate (8) by means of transmission. The transmission device (1) comprises a lighting device (2) and a detection device (4), between which a gap (6) is formed which is adapted to receive the microtiter plate (8). The illumination device (2) has at least one emission source (20). Furthermore, the illumination device (2) is designed to guide emission light generated by the emission source (20) through at least one cavity (80) of the microtiter plate (8) located in the intermediate space (6). The detection device (4) has at least one detector (40), which is designed to measure light signals received from the at least one cavity (80). The transmission device (1) and the method are further developed in that the detection device (4) comprises an angle-dependent filter (42) which is arranged between the illumination device (2) and the at least one detector (40) in the beam path of the emission light and substantially only lets through those light beams (45) whose angles of incidence (46) are smaller than a predefinable critical angle (48).
