A communication system uses several communication connections, preferably connections that use different communication media. The multiple communication links may include a high latency / high bandwidth connection using a fiber optic cable that is designed to carry large volumes of data but has high latency. The communication links may also include a low latency / low bandwidth link implemented using spatial wave propagation of radio waves and designed to carry smaller volumes of data with lower latency over a substantial portion of the earth's surface. The low latency / low bandwidth connection uses a transmitting antenna system in which aspects such as antenna height, soil type and topography of the surrounding area at the transmitting location are adapted in order to optimize the propagation direction and angle. Controlling these and other aspects increases the predictability and reliability of the wireless connection by managing the number of hops and the hop distance for each hop between the transmitting and receiving antennas. The two communication links can be used together to coordinate different activities, such as buying and selling financial instruments.
