In order to improve the safety of an electrically operated motor vehicle, a method for fault detection in an inverter circuit (1) is specified. A direct current strength is measured using a DC current sensor (3) and for each phase of an AC side (4) a respective alternating current strength is measured using one or more AC current sensors (5). The currents are integrated over a predetermined time interval and a sum of the integrated currents is formed. A value of the sum is compared with a predetermined limit value by means of a sum current logic unit (6). Depending on a result of the comparison, an error reaction is carried out or initiated by means of the sum current logic unit (6).
