A method for automatically setting a human-machine interface (HMI) display includes: acquiring customer location data from a personal communication device and sensor signals from a sensor mounted on a motor vehicle when a customer approaches the vehicle; Determining whether the customer is within a first range of the vehicle, a second range that is closer to the vehicle than the first range, or within a third range that is closer than the second range; and setting a lighting level of an HMI display of the vehicle based on the distance range, wherein the lighting level is set to: a high brightness when the customer is within the first distance range, an average brightness lower than the high brightness when the customer is within the second distance range; or a low brightness less than the average brightness if the customer is within the third distance range.
