The present invention claims a method and a device which enable the chain to malfunction when the driver actuates the pedals of a two-wheeler, in particular a bicycle with an auxiliary drive. For this purpose, at least one pedaling variable is recorded which represents the driver's pedaling behavior. A comparison with a threshold value is carried out on the basis of this step size, and depending on the comparison it is recognized that the chain or its operation on the two-wheeler is malfunctioning. The malfunction of the operation of the chain can consist in the chain breaking or jumps off a chainring or a crack. In both cases, the resistance that the driver experiences when stepping on the pedals would suddenly disappear, so that there is a risk of losing control of the two-wheeler and falling. Corresponding detection of the malfunction, in particular by initiating a countermeasure in the sense of increasing the pedal resistance when the pedal is operated, increases the safety of the driver.
