The invention relates to a liquid crystal device having a first and a second wafer and a liquid crystal layer (LC) to be provided between the first and the second wafer. The liquid crystal layer (LC) is connected to a spacer layer (SP) and the spacer layer (SP) has a multiplicity of structural elevations (E) which are distributed along the surface of the spacer layer (SP).
